Do You Put Your Trash Bag Seam In or Out… and Why Do I Care So Much?
I always put the seam of the trash bag on the inside.
It just makes sense.
Think about it—do the seams of your clothes go on the outside? No. They’re on the inside. So why would a trash bag be any different?
I don’t make the rules. I just follow logic.
Every time the trash gets changed, I check it.
And every time… it’s wrong.
Do my kids purposely put the seam on the outside?
Yes. Yes, they do.
Sometimes they even rush to throw something in the bag so I can’t “fix it.”
My husband does the same thing.
At this point, it’s not a mistake—it’s a coordinated effort.
But here’s my argument:
Wouldn’t a seam on the outside make it more likely to split or leak?
All the pressure from the trash pushes outward.
If the seam is already facing out… that feels like a weak spot waiting to happen.
If it’s on the inside, though?
More structure. More support. Less betrayal.
And before anyone says I’m overthinking this—
I’ve read the directions.
Yes. The directions. On trash bags.
They say:
Tear a new liner from the roll and open it. Place the bag’s opening over the rim of the trash can like a “hat,” then push the center down into the bin.
Which means… technically… the seam ends up on the inside.
But what do we all do instead?
Rip it off, shake it open, throw it in, move on with our lives.
And guess what that does?
Seam on the outside.
And I’m just saying… if your trash bag has ever leaked,
this might be why.
I’m not saying I’m right.
But I’m also not not saying that.
Try it my way and see what happens.
Worst case? Nothing changes.
Best case? I’ve been right all along.
Honestly, at this point I just need a trash bag company to step in and settle this.
Be honest—are you an inside seam person or completely wrong?
